Shishir Goenka: Founder of ‘Do U Speak Green’

With clothes that have prints asking the world to save forests and wildlife and fabrics like organic cotton and bamboo, Do U Speak Green, India’s first eco-friendly webstore is asking consumers to speak green, for the sake of forests and cotton farmers.

The ethical clothing brand is an initiative by Fusion Clothing Company which has 18 years of experience in manufacturing and exporting knitted garments. Founder of ‘Do U Speak Green’, Shishir Goenka always wanted to do something for forests that he saw fast depleting. He has also been a Life Member of BNHS since many years and now has partnered with WWF India.

He talked to Make Cotton Sustainable about ethical clothing market in India and how it can grow.

Do U Speak Green is India’s first eco-friendly clothing webstore. What was the inspiration behind it?

Our inspiration for Do U Speak Green came about due to the absence of smart looking clothing for nature lovers and also absence of organic clothing in India. Most importantly, I have a passion for wildlife and helping preserve our natural environment. Hence the decision to contribute 10 % of sales for the environment.

Where do you source your organic cotton from? How do you check the authenticity of the cotton you use?

We buy the organic yarns from Super Spinning Mills and rely on the Control Union certificate they give us.

Are Indian customers aware about organic clothing?

Not so much, we need to educate them.

How is the trend of acceptance of ethical clothing in India?

It is definitely growing very fast, but will take time to mature into mainstream as the same has not even happened internationally yet.

What do you think can be done to boost the demand for organic clothing in India?

Increased publicity is the answer. We have put up a video on our webstore showing how the cultivation of conventional cotton is harming farmers – they do not have protection from pesticides and also the soil and environment is damaged. We are targeting all those who care for their own and their children’s future.

It is our mission to contribute to the betterment of our natural environment with the help of our fellow citizens. When someone buys our products, not only do they sport clothes which do not contain harmful chemicals, but are also contributing to the environment in three ways. They are encouraging the growth of organic cotton which helps keep the land free of harmful chemicals and fertilizers. The amount is directly contributed by our company to WWF India, which will help them undertake more conservation activities. And last but not the least, they are indirectly helping farmers get higher realization that keeps them healthy and debt free.
