For him, less has always been more. Clean cuts with minimum fuss and maximum style. Along with minimalism, he has also been associated with the word eco friendly for almost 20 years now. He lives in Colavale, a humble village in Goa and has also done his bit to support the Goan traditional Kunbi sari.

A man of few words and a signature minimalistic style, Wendell Rodericks is taking sustainable fashion to prestigious platforms. Recently he showcased the simple and elegant beauty of Malkha cotton at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2012. Next year, he would be opening the Biofach World Organic Trade Fair with his fashion show.

Drawing inspiration from his village and its people Wendell creates designs that strike an instant chord with everyone.

Wendell Rodericks in conversation with Make Cotton Sustainable:

What inspired you to use Malkha cotton in your collection for Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Spring-Summer 2012?

For many years, since 1991 I have aimed to be eco friendly. Those were the times when the words were not coined in India. This season, I discovered the beauty of Malkha cotton. Since it eliminates as many as six procedures, the cotton has a natural spring and feel to it. I am going to use it for my debut at BioFach, the world’s largest organic fair, in February 2012 in Nuremberg, Germany.

How well do you think organic fabrics go with your minimalistic style?

They are perfect not only for my style but also for my philosophy of life. I enjoy creating in a village ambiance and feel that organic fabric is the way many people want to dress, if given the choice.

We heard that you were involved with setting up a weaving unit in Goa.

We did the Kunbi sari on a village loom in Goa. I have presented a project to the Goa government and hope they take it up.

Should we hope to see more of eco-friendly collections by you in future?

Definitely. Being eco friendly is not a one season sensibility. As I said I have this as a part of my psyche since 1991.
