Anti Child Labor Clause For Bt Seed Companies

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has passed a proposal that would make Bt cotton companies add an anti Child Labor clause in the agreements between the contractor and the farmers, says a news report in IBN Live.

“Child Labor is being engaged in large numbers in the Bt cotton fields in Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. They are forced to work for 14 hours and even carry pesticides exposing themselves to toxins,” Dr Yogesh Dube, Member, NCPCR, said.

To handle this issue of Child Labor in the fields, NCPCR held a meeting in Andhra Pradesh recently which was attended by representatives of 12 Bt cotton seed manufacturing companies leading to the final decision of adding the anti Child Labor clause.
